Our Second Offering in Support of Radiolab

Rl_impactist_mainorange

Impactist is the collaborative work of directors Kelly Meador and Daniel Elwing. In response to the episode ‘Space’, their print contains a coded language of a fictitious civilization based elsewhere in our solar system. To solve the cryptology, a key is contained within the design which stores factual mathematical, chemical, text, and visual data that in total tells a story of a living race reaching out to the cosmos.

84% of all profits of this design will go to benefit??Radiolab, who believes your ears are a portal to another world. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and human experience. Big questions are investigated, tinkered with, and encouraged to grow. Bring your curiosity, and we’ll feed it with possibility.

Comes screen printed on American Apparel Orange or Black. Design by??Kelly Meador and Daniel Elwing.

Chop Shop is All About Radiolab

Rl_goatcow_main

If you are unaware of this program on WNYC and you have the slightest interest in the human race, then you need to be following this program. Sometimes compared to the ever popular “This American Life”, Radiolab [http://www.radiolab.org] takes science fact and puts a human face on it by looking at the world of science through the whole of human experience. Hard to understand and sometimes hard to imagine science concepts are made real as they intersect the lives and stories of the subjects

Main_radiolab

All profits of this t-shirt design [http://bit.ly/aQs8a8] is to benefit the show and WNYC. The art is by Jez Burrows [http://www.jezburrows.com] and was a smash hit on a previous fund-raiser sold as part of a set of small prints. The icon of the goat standing on a cow among a smattering of papers was inspired by a popular true story from Radiolab which actually centers around exactly such a scene.

Chop Shop plans a whole series of t-shirt designs for Radiolab which explains the whole new section on the site [http://bit.ly/9Vcgd3]. Look for additions to the series in May and June.

Let Us Illustrate This Problem for You

Thinice_winter_553

Our Parent company The Chopping Block, has been working closely with Climate Central to help illustrate the actual data they get back from NASA and the US Navy on climate change. Climate Central is a nonprofit science and media organization created to provide clear and objective information about climate change and its potential risks. The illustrations are an attempt at showing the raw data in an entirely apolitical way that is easy for the average person to understand. The issue of climate change is a complex one and we hope that these illustrations can help people focus on the data, because climate change like any other science should be based upon data and not opinion.

Alaska_01_web-553x310

Above is an attempt to speak in volumes??? It is difficult to speak to people in metric tons, so we try to convey the amounts in terms people are familiar with. Here we illustrate how the amount of ice lost in Alaska over 3 years would be enough to cover the states of CT, VT, ME, NJ, MD, NH, MA, RI and about 90% of NY in about 3 feet of ice. See also a similar treatment of Greenland Ice Loss.

Arctic_fall_web-553x310

Another way of looking at how the Arctic ice is thinning over 25 years. This time we are also showing the actual distribution of thicknesses over the region. Here the data on Autumn levels are shown and an additional illustration of these thicknesses is also available for Winter data on the Climate Central website.

Icebergs_553

Perhaps the most shocking data set is this illustration of how much ice is actually shedding off the coast of Greenland. The two front bergs represent the actual tonnage of bergs that were dislodged from the Greenland land mass. Only 7 billion in a TEN year period from 92-02 and 177 billion in only THREE years from 04-07. Hard to argue with those numbers??? though people will.

Chop Shop SciFi Icon Tees for Kids Too

All three of Chop Shop’s Science Fiction t-shirts are also available in children’s (below) and toddler’s sizes (above). For toddlers, the crowd is edited down to only include the “friendlies” which should keep the nightmares at bay, this change usually results in around half the number of icons seen in the adult artwork. The kid’s version includes all the icons taken from the adult versions… nasties included.

Kidsscifi_main

Kids versions of the art is shown above. By the way… the alien version glows in the toddler and kid versions. The robot design in kid sizes (not toddler) includes a glow layer where all the eyes and buttons glow.
